A BEGINNING IS NEVER A BEGINNING...

There is always something that comes before.

Welcome to Truth Before Healing

Reconciliation and healing cannot happen without first confronting historic truth.  We have to go back to what  trauma has occurred in the land where we now live.  We must face with courage what has shaped the present moment.  This requires a multi-generational view.

Background:  In 2022, A Truth-Telling Task Force was formed in the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real (Coastal Central California) in 2022. It was committed to uncovering and acknowledging the real history of the land and its Indigenous Peoples. The Task-Force finished its work in 2024.

What was identified is an ongoing crucial process.  It requires those of us in the present generation, who represent the settler, invader culture, take up the work to understanding, recognize the privilege that was gained and own the past of the land upon which they now life.  Only then can meaningful movement be initiated toward reconciliation, reparations, justice, and healing. That process has only just begun.

This site offers resource tools for that process.  Included is  an interactive timeline (below) that reveals the history of California’s original inhabitants and the profound impact of colonial incursions over the centuries. Our goal is not to create shame, but to expose the full story—one that includes both the suffering of Indigenous communities and the systems of conquest, erasure, and exploitation that enabled it.

Telling the truth is the foundation for justice. Only when we recognize and accept the reality of what has come before can we begin to build right relationships, repair harm, and move toward reconciliation—not as a symbolic gesture, but as a commitment to a transformed future.

This Resource is an act of Reparation

This site will continue to grow with new information and resources, offering greater depth to our shared history. We invite you to explore, reflect, and engage in the work of truth-telling, understanding that until this work is done, healing remains out of reach.  Please indicate your interest in our effort by filling out the Response Form at the bottom of the Commitment Page.
